Back Country Walks

The tracks listed below are a sample of the many “back country” walks that are available in the South Island of New Zealand.

As they are tracks less travelled, you can expect a true wilderness experience.In general you will be travelling in very small groups, and likely to see only a small number of other trekkers. This is a unique opportunity to hike in the Southern Alps, and view some really spectacular scenery, so if this sounds like you include one or more of these tracks in your New Zealand hiking experience

These tracks are a little more challenging than those of the Great Hikes, but anyone who is fit, and has some hiking experience will find them very rewarding. We have listed a representative sample of tracks, but there are many more available.
